Mt Chilbo in Winter

The world of snow has unfolded in Mt Chilbo, which is counted as one of the celebrated mountains in Korea. In the winter season majestic, mysterious and fantastic appearances of peaks, valleys and beaches in Inner Chilbo, Outer Chilbo and Sea Chilbo exhibit characteristic scenery.

Covering an area of 250 sq km, Mt Chilbo encompasses a vast area of Myongchon, Hwadae and Myonggan counties and some parts of Orang County in North Hamgyong Province. It is particularly called Solbaeksan (white-snow mountain) in winter as its scenery is exotically beautiful in season after season.

At Sungson Rock which is said that fairies used it to ascend to heaven you can command a bird’s-eye view of the east and the northwest of the Kumgang Valley. Here you can enjoy wonderful scenery of oddly-shaped rocks crowned with snow in winter. It is nearly girded by Mansa Peak, Chonbul Peak, Jonggak Peak and Wonsungi (Monkey) Rock in Inner Chilbo and distantly by peaks in Outer Chilbo, presenting fantastic scenery.

Among the renowned scenic spots is Taemo Rock in Inner Chilbo. It looks like a woman landing from a boat with her baby on her back and a big bundle on her head. This snow-capped rock unfolds a marvellous view.

White snow-capped Mujigae (rainbow) Rock in Sea Chilbo evokes a different sentiment from the summer one, with one edge being rooted in mountain slope and the other in the sea.

Pine trees topped with white snow growing on the crowns of mysteriously-shaped rocks, mid-slope of cliffs and crevices add much beauty of winter scenery to Mt Chilbo, which is called “Mt Kumgang of North Hamgyong.”
